Preparations before Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty surgery treatment within scope, as in all aesthetic operations, the patient should know what he wants in the eyelid aesthetic procedure and inform his plastic surgeon about his expectations after the surgery.
- Before blepharoplasty the patient's expectations should be determined .
- Detailed information should be given about the surgical technique and its results.
- The physician should obtain information about the patient's general health status, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, bleeding disorders, and wound healing charact.
- Preliminary information about visual field, tear problems, and lens use should be obtained.
- Information should be obtained about the surgeries the patient has had, especially on the eyelid.
- Before eyelid surgery, aspirin and its derivative blood thinners, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, gingko biloba, herbal medicines and vitamin E supplements should be avoided.
- Daily medications should be continued if the doctor deems it appropriate.
- Before the surgery you should not eat or drink anything after midnight.
- Before the eyelid surgery, you should take a shower and wash your eyebrows with shampoo.
- Make-up should not be worn.
- False eyelashes, contact lenses and accessories should be left at home.
- Cigarettes and other tobacco products should be stopped 2-3 weeks before surgery as they delay wound healing.
What should be done after Eyelid Surgery?
- In the first two days after blepharoplasty, the eyelid and its surrounding area become swollen and bruised. To reduce this swelling and bruising, cold compresses are applied to the eyes on the first day.
- Swelling and bruising can be reduced by keeping the head elevated.
- Antibiotics, anti-edema and painkillers are given.
- Eye drops and pomade are given against dry eyes. It is used for the first 5 days.
- Depending on the type of anesthesia applied, you go home after 1-4 hours.
- Resting at home for 3-5 days with head up is sufficient. For the next week, you should sleep with your head up again.
- No significant pain is expected.
- Stitches are usually removed after a week.
- You should wait 3-7 days to return to work.
- Heavy exercises and excessive fatigue should be avoided for 3 weeks.
- Swelling and bruises decrease after the 5th day and continue on the 14-16th day. It disappears almost completely within a day.
- Bruises remaining after the day can be hidden with make-up.
- In the first 1-2 weeks, there may be temporary discomfort such as excessive tears, blurred vision and sensitivity to light.
- Your eyes will be sensitive to irritants such as sunlight and wind for a few weeks. Sunglasses should be used outdoors.
- In the first week after eyelid aesthetics, activities such as reading, computer and television that may cause eye dryness should be avoided.
What should not be done after eyelid surgery?
- After eyelid surgery the eye should not be touched , as touching it may cause the eye to become infected. Likewise, eye make-up should not be applied for the first two weeks.
- For the first 2 days after blepharoplasty, eye-tiring behavior should not be done.
- The medications prescribed by your plastic surgeon should not be used incorrectly or irregularly.
- To prevent surgery scars from darkening, it is necessary to protect the eyes from direct sunlight. If possible, avoid being outdoors on sunny days until full recovery occurs. If you have to go out, sunglasses should be used.
